During the October 2013 half term, 24 students and 4 staff from Saint Aidan’s went on the trip of a lifetime to China. Following two flights, stopping off in Abu Dhabi, the group arrived slightly tired but very excited at having travelled half way round the world.
The visit included all the iconic sights of Beijing; every day brought new experiences visiting the Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Olympic Park and the Beijing Zoo to meet the Giant Pandas. They also learnt how silk is made and the importance of pearls.
There was a visit to a high school where Saint Aidan’s students took part in the morning exercise with 2000 Chinese students and an art lesson. They also learned how to write in Chinese. In the evening the Chinese Opera and an Acrobat Show further developed the experience of a completely different culture.
A highlight of the week was definitely walking along the Great Wall of China which was certainly a challenge due to the incredible inclines along the way. The food, the bartering in the markets and a wonderful tour guide certainly made the trip to China an unforgettable experience.
