A Cultural Experience

A Cultural Experience 2

Saint Aidan’s students reunite with their exchange students in Germany.

Nine pupils and two teachers set off from Poulton-Le-Fylde train station on Saturday 24th June in the early morning to fly from Manchester to Munich airport for their seven night stay in Ingolstadt. The annual German Exchange visit to Christoph-Scheiner-Gymnasium School in Ingolstadt provides students with the opportunity to stay with a German family, experience life in a German school in Ingolstadt and to experience the culture of Germany.

Mrs Kelly Gill, Director of MFL, explained, “We were lucky enough to have wonderful weather for most of the week hitting highs of 30 degrees. We welcomed some light rain on Thursday for our trip to Munich to cool us down.

A Cultural Expeirence 1“The weekend we arrived was an opportunity for students to spend time with their families and they all visited fantastic places on day trips out.

“During the school week we went on day trips to Regensburg where we saw the sights of the town and then to Munich to visit the Marienplatz and have a tour of the city by the German students which was very informative. We were also able to visit the top sights experience what wonderful city it is as well as squeeze in a little bit of shopping ‘German style’.”

During the week at the Christoph-Scheiner Gymnasium, pupils spent time in lessons, immersed in the German language and taking a full part in lessons.

Mrs Gill said, “Our pupils particularly enjoyed the shorter school day (8am – 1pm) and the 45 minute lessons and no uniform at school. Although, they found it quite hard to follow everything in the lessons as they were learning Maths, Science, German and even Russian. It really did test their language skills.”

On the last evening all the parents and families were invited to an exchange meal at the very popular restaurant ‘The KIK’ which gave everyone an opportunity to meet and talk about the week’s events and some are even planning their own exchange over the Summer and next year!

The group travelled home on Saturday morning after a long, busy and fun week.

Mrs Gill said, “The exchange programme really does enrich pupil’s learning of a foreign language. The full immersion into the language, gives students not only a real sense of achievement, as they communicate with their German peers and new families but also a real purpose to their learning. It also gives them an incredible insight into another culture and experience their way of life, the food, hobbies and lifestyles. It was also an opportunity for students to further and build on relationships with the German and English students.”
