Sports Round Up
It has been a busy half term for sporting fixtures. Here’s a round-up of how well Saint Aidan’s teams have got on.
The girls’ netball teams matches have been very eventful. Year 7 played a friendly match against Carr Hill. Kaiseen Guo captained the team as they started off strongly and managed to pass the ball straight down to the shooters. Kaiseen said, “By half time we’d scored 5 which was amazing considering it was our first match as a team.” The second half continued with more goals and the match finished with Saint Aidan’s winning 10-0.
It isn’t just Year 7 who have been successful in their games, Year 8 also won their match against Carr Hill, AKS and Hodgson. The A team beat Carr Hill 8-2 with Adelaide Hodgkinson named as Player of the Match. The B team also won 10-3. This was the third out of four matches that the girls have won. The captain Katie Wood said, “We were finding lots of great space and it was good team work. The passes and shots were accurate as well.”
Earlier in the term, the A team lost to Hodgson whilst the B team romped home to a 21-1 victory. The B team continued the winning streak by beating AKS 14-4, with Becky Verity being named Player of the Match. Despite this success the teams couldn’t quite transfer that winning pattern when they played Baines as both the A and B team lost.
The Year 11 girls have has a mixed start by losing to Millfield 10-8 but beating Carr Hill 5-4. They also lost to Baines 24-8.
Evie Ralph explains what playing Millfield was like. “We knew it was going to be a tough match as we’d played them before. The match started off with scoring equally but after half time, Millfield took the lead. At half time we have a team talk and established what we needed to do to improve. We couldn’t quite draw back the points we’d lost in the first half and the match finished 10-8. We were very pleased with how we played so weren’t too sad we’d lost.”
The player of the match against Millfield was Lauren Barton, whilst Evie Ralph won POM against Carr Hill.
After arriving at Baines school, Saint Aidan’s knew they’d but up against some stiff competition. Having previously played against Baines the team were aware they were a strong side. At half time the score was 11-4 to Baines. Despite a team talk at half time and an injury to the Baines team, the girls couldn’t quite pull back the score in their favour. They did however reach the 8 goal target set by their coach, Mrs Pears, at half time.
It isn’t just the girls who’ve been impressing in the sports world. On Tuesday 25th October, the Saint Aidan’s Year 8 Football team went to Fuse Football in Thornton to play their 5th place play-off match against Millfield.
They went into the game with 13 players, but Millfield only having seven. So being the team we are Saint Aidan’s gifted Millfield 2 players for both halves. The first half began with Saint Aidan's dominating the entirety coming out with a 3-1 lead.
The second half began again with Saint Aidan's dominating again, with 25 minutes flying by. The end result was 9-2 to Saint Aidan's! Jack Birchenough scored 4, Tom Whiteside scored 3, Travis Stringfellow scored 1 but what a goal and Brandon Smith who scoring 1. Saint Aidan's Man of the Match was Brett Newcombe, but all the boys deserved it due to the outcome of the game.
Let hope next half term brings even more success for the saint Aidan’s sports teams.
