This Summer, Year 11 student, Archie Mills, will be off to Malawi to work with an organisation called FOMO. Archie takes up the story:
This summer I will be going to Malawi for 3 weeks to help FOMO by renovating one of the centres so it can be used to help more of the Malawian community for years to come. While out there I will be refurbishing one of the existing 14 buildings damaged by a typhoon in 2023. I will also be spending time with the orphans and exploring Malawi through safari and enjoying its culture.
Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) is a community-based orphan care programme supporting over 2,000 children through a network of 14 centres in the Mulanje district of Malawi. FOMO is a Lancashire-based charity that works with orphans and their families and do significant amount of work for the people who are involved. The charity was set up in the year 2000 and has expanded to look after over 6000 orphans and now has a tailor’s shop and thir very own football team.
Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the south, southwest, and southeast. It is quite a poor country and has 1.3 million orphans. This is partially due to over three-quarters of the population earning less than £2 per day. Malawi is famous for being smiley, friendly and having a slow and easy approach to life.
